Switch user or log out – macOS

If several people use a Mac or a different account is needed, there are three options. They differ in what happens to open programs.

Lock, switch or log out?

  • Lock: The screen is locked, everything stays open. For short breaks when the same person returns. Quickly with Ctrl + ⌘ + Q.

  • Switch user: Another person logs in. Your own session keeps running in the background; programs and unsaved documents stay open.

  • Log out: Your session is ended and all programs are closed. Save first.

Switch user

  1. Turn it on once: Apple menu › System Settings › Control Center › for Fast User Switching, choose Show in Menu Bar.

  2. Click the icon or your name in the top right of the menu bar.

  3. Choose the other person or click Login Window … and log in there.

Log out

  1. Save open documents.

  2. Choose Apple menu › Log Out [name] (or ⇧ + ⌘ + Q) and confirm.

Logging in correctly

  • Account on this Mac: click the account in the login window and enter the Mac password.

  • Company Mac with a network account: If the account isn't shown, choose Other … and enter the user name as provided by it-tects.

Important: Don't switch off the Mac while other people are still logged in. Their unsaved work would otherwise be lost.
